Mass of Christian burial was held on Monday, October 21, 2013, at the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church of Langdon for Aelred Dettler, 88, of Langdon.

He died Friday, October 18, 2013, at the Cavalier County Memorial Hospital in Langdon.
Interment at Calvary Cemetery, Langdon.
Aelred was born on November 9, 1924, to Leonard and Beatrice (Fitzgerald) Dettler, at their farm near Langdon. He was raised and educated in Langdon, where he graduated from St. Alphonsus High School as Valedictorian. He continued his education at the University of North Dakota, where he pursued a degree in Engineering. An illness in the family brought him home, and he began his lifelong career, and love of farming. He was united in marriage in 1953, to Doreen Carignan, in Olga. They became the loving parents of six children. In 1978, they built a home a mile east of the home farm where they lived until moving into Langdon in 1997. He was a member of the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the Langdon Eagles Club. He was an avid crossword puzzle worker, enjoyed woodworking, and collected trains and tractors.
He is survived by his wife Doreen, and children: Kevin (Becky) Dettler of Doland, S.D.; Mary Beth (James) Sexton of West Fargo; Steven (Barb) Dettler of Langdon; Chalmer (Lori) Dettler of Langdon; David (Tam) Dettler of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Joni (Dennis) Flaten of Devils Lake, 17 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and a sister, Moira Yahna of Dayton, OH.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Gerald Dettler, sisters Joan Olson and Ellen Edwardson.
In Lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the St. Alphonsus School Foundation.
