She died Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at Maple Manor Care Center of Langdon.
Interment at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Cemetery.
Bernadine M. Kartes was born to John and Anna (Metzger) Kartes on July 29, 1912 at the Kartes family farm near Mt. Carmel. She attended country school near Mt. Carmel. She was united in marriage to Marvin Mikkelsen on February 3, 1930. They lived and farmed in West Hope Township then moved to Mt. Carmel Township where they purchased her family farm in 1941. They lived there until 1960 when they moved to Langdon. She lived on her own in her home before becoming a resident at Maple Manor Care Center in February of 2013. She loved to knit. All of her grandchildren have an afghan made by her, and many of her great- and great-great-grandchildren have blankets. She loved flowers and made sure her deck was full of them. She had a good memory and could name all of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She loved to go to the farm and went on the combine well into her 90s. She was in many five generations photos. She was a member of Catholic Daughters and Altar Society. She enjoyed attending Discipleship Bible Study Group on Wednesday mornings.
She is survived by her sons: Melford (Norma) of Seattle, Wash., Ronald (Bette) of Langdon, Ted of Langdon, Floyd (Betty) of Langdon, Wayne (Audrey) of Langdon, Tom (Leota) of Langdon, Dennis (Gloria) of Langdon, Merle (Kaye) of Grand Forks, Dale of Wenatchee, Wash.; daughter-in-law Marjorie Mikkelsen of Langdon; 54 grandchildren; 109 great-grandchildren; 54 great-great-grandchildren; brother Lowell (Marilyn) Kartes of Langdon and sister Florentine Gapp of Langdon.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Marvin; sons Joseph and Gerald; daughter Darlene; grandchildren: Barbara Mikkelsen, Kelly Mikkelsen, Justin Mikkelsen; six brothers: Sylvestor, Mark, Clem, Allen, Abraham, Henry; sister Laura Perius Bruers; and daughters-in-law: Lois and Olivene.
