Jaclyn Smith had no idea she would wind up being a horologist (watch maker) growing up in St. Paul.

Her father Len Karter, a 40-year veteran horologist, kept Jackie at bay as a young girl until she was prepared to handle the tools of the trade.

“We grew up with a bunch of watches in the house,” she recalled. “I was always told I couldn’t touch the tools until I went to school.”

In fact, Smith said she really didn’t have any interest in the family business until later in life.

“I actually didn’t understand or respect what he did until I took the time to do it myself,” Smith explained. “I always knew I liked fixing things and wanted to take stuff apart but I didn’t know I would end up in watches.”

Now, after earning a micro- mechanical diploma and a Swiss watch certification at St. Paul Technical College in 2007, the second-generation watch maker has brought her trade to Langdon and founded Timing Is Everything Watch Repair at 705 Third Street in the old Harry’s Watch Repair building.

“I am very happy to expand my services to the people of North Dakota,” she said on Wednesday. “No matter where you find yourself, you are happy because of what you do and if you like your job, you never work a day in your life.”

Smith offers service through mail-ins, appointments or meetings and is building her business foundation upon availability to her customers and keen flexibility to meet her customer’s needs.

“We have the talent right here in Langdon and I am flexible to work with everybody in any kind of situation,” she said. “Don’t be afraid to bring me any kind of watch piece. I love them all.”

Smith is in her shop most mornings from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. and is looking forward to meeting the community.
