A little over 13 months ago, Chelsea Hurzeler stepped on the campus of Salon Professional Academy in Fargo, not knowing what the future held.
Today, Hurzeler,19, is the proud owner of a cosmetology license and has set up shop at Cathy’s Towne Shoppe in Langdon, her home since 2006.
“It was hard to be away from home but it went pretty well,” Hurzeler said. “I had the chance to compete in a nationwide hair stylist show and although I didn’t place, I had a lot of fun.
“We learned a lot of new and interesting things.”
And Hurzeler has brought those ideas with her to Cathy’s including manicures, hot towel pedicures and just about everything that is hair, nails and skin.
In addition, patrons will now be able to enjoy full body waxing, full body wraps and nail shellacking, a polish that lasts for nearly two weeks.
Being new to the business, Hurzeler believes she made the right decision to start her career at Cathy’s.
“I liked how much experience they have,” she said. “I know I can grow from them and learn from experience versus somebody without that much experience.”
Nail shellacking will be new to everyone.
“I am working on developing some new colors and acrylics,” Hurzeler explained. “It is a better polish. Customers will be placed under UV lights and this is so much better than regular polish because it will last two weeks..”
Hurzeler would like to own her own salon someday in Langdon but for now, it is all about learning and perfecting her art.
“I listen to my customers and I really take into consideration what they want,” she said. “I do a good consultation and tell them what their hair needs are and what they are lacking and what they can do better.
“I am a naturally excitable person and seeing everybody feel better is what I’m about.”
