Let’s get this week started by informing you about a basketball camp that is coming to Langdon June 23-26.  It’s for boys and girls in incoming grades 3-8.  Langdon-Munich boys and girls basketball coaches Kyle Knutson and Ethen Askvig will be running the camp, along with some current high school players.  Grades 3-5 will go from 8-10am, with grades 6-8 going from 10-12:30pm each day.  Coach Knutson told us it’s not too late for kids to get involved in the camp, they can just show up the first day.  Cost for the camp is 50 dollars.  This is a great way to work on kids skills, so hopefully everyone will take advantage of the opportunity.

Langdon Area School District Foundation Tournament coming June 28

We talked about Coach Askvig a few moments ago, and we need to congratulate he and Kyle Rollness on winning the 20th Annual Cavalier County Memorial Hospital Charity Golf Tournament held June 14 at the Langdon Country Club.  The Askvig-Rollness team shot a sizzling 62, beat the teams of Darryl Kartes/Travis Jordan and Jeff Howatt/Adam Bergman by two shots.  All told it was another great event this year, as the rain held off until just after the tournament was completed.

Now we need to move on and tell you about the next tournament on the Langdon Country Club agenda, and that the Langdon Area School District Foundation Tournament, which is happening June 28. Tournament organizer Chalmer Dettler, who made it through his first ever full marathon in Winnipeg June 14 (with a personal best time! Oh, and some guy named Bob Simmons also ran a personal best in the same race.  Big congats to both gentlemen!), tell us that there was still room for three four person teams in the golf tourney.  It can a mens, womens or mixed team.  Call Chalmer at 256-5431 to get signed up.  We will be golfing in it once again this year, and we can tell you from experience that it is a lot of fun.

American Legion Field beginning its State Tournament transformation

If you’ve driven by American Legion Field the past couple of days, you will notice that preparations have begun for the 2014 State B American Legion Baseball Tournament, which will be held in Langdon July 30-Aug. 3.  It all starts with the field and the playing surface, and many thanks to Jay Adam, Marty Tetrault, Randy Hill, Tom Beachamp, Dylan Crockett, Jim Salvaggio and Ethen Askvig (there’s that guy again) for there efforts in getting the diamond ready. Thanks as well to Simplot Grower Solutions for providing the field with fertilizer and to Mikkelsen Brothers Construction for use of their backhoe.  This is just the start of work for the state tourney, as things will continue to ramp in the five plus weeks before the tournament begins.  Langdon gets an automatic host team bid in the tourney, so it should be a magical week.

Street Dance June 28

We will leave by reminding folks of the the free street dance that will be held the evening of June 28 in Langdon at the Boyd Block Plaza.  It’s sponsered by Sporty’s, the Langdon Eagles Club and Tom’s Lounge.  The Downtown Horns from Grand Forks will be performing.  They are a good group, sort of Free Beer-like.  So get out and shake a leg.  Also the weekend of the 28th their will be a reunion of the 1965 Langdon American Baseball State Champion team. The likes of Wayne Westphal, Gene Manson, and many more will all be in attendance.  They are having dinner and reception the evening of June 27 at the Langdon Country Club, then heading to Tom’s Lounge for further festivities.

“See ya!”  next week!
