July comes in like a freezing lion

As we come to you this week, July 2014 will be remembered as one where it began with frigid temperatures and plenty of rainfall. Furnaces all over Cavalier County were kicking in as temps dipped to mid-40s. You just never know about the weather North Dakota, but this was a little out there even for us. What do you do when it’s that cold and wet in July? Watch World Cup Soccer of course… We were actually transfixed watching team USA just miss coming back to Belguim. And yes, that is the first time soccer has been mentioned in this column.
Langdon School Foundation Tournament a success despite the weather
The 14th Annual Langdon Area School District Foundation Golf Tournament was held at the Langdon Country Club June 28. Around 80 golfers were involved in the event. The foursome of Darryl Kartes, Jeff Fisk, Brandon Downs and Jason Tryan won the tourney shooting a remarkable four man scramble score of 58. While the tournament was stopped twice due to rain, it did get completed and a good time was had by all. The organizers would like to thank everyone who braved the weather and supported the Foundation, along with thanking the many sponsors who helped make the tourney a huge success. I would personally like to thank the foundation board for the IPad Air I won in a door prize drawing. And it was drawing, not my golfing prowess that won it.
State B Legion Tournament coming together
July 30-Aug 3 are the dates of the 2014 State Class B American Legion Baseball Tournament which will be held in Langdon. The tourney is really going to be coming fast now that we are in July. If you would like to put an ad in the tournament program and have not been contacted (and they have tried to get to everyone), please contact Daryl Kempel at 370-2210. You can also call that number if you would like to make a donation to the tourney, as there are many expenses involved in hosting the event. Work has been ongoing at American Legion Field, and we would like to put a special shout out to the crews at Cavalier Rural Electric and Langdon Implement for coming out to help re-sod portions of the infield. We will have much more information on the tournament next week.
Tournaments being moved around
Being new sod is in at American Legion Field, it needs time to take and grow, so the Northern League Babe Ruth Baseball Tournament was going to be moved to Edgar Westphal Field in Munich, pending league approval. Also a 12U Girls Softball Tournament may be moved to Langdon July 9, and the 10U Little League Baseball Tournament will be held in Langdon July 13. The best thing you can do is keep checking the Langdon Area Baseball Facebook page and tune in to KNDK 1080 for the latest information.
Happy 4th of July weekend and “See ya!” next week!
