New Domestic Violence Director

The Domestic Violence and Abuse Center, Incorporated (DVAC) which operates in Walsh, Pembina and Cavalier County has a new Executive Director in Cassie Bernier as of December 1 of 2014.

Bernier previously worked as the Direct Service Advocate for DVAC from 2011 to 2013 serving Pembina County. Bernier is originally from the Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota area and moved to Cavalier from St. Cloud, Minn. along with her husband in 2010 where they lived for three years. The Bernier’s moved to Fargo for a year and returned in the spring of 2014.

“I worked at the Pembina County Sheriff’s office prior to taking the position as director with DVAC” Bernier stated.

Bernier’s new position as the Executive Director for DVAC has her overseeing the agency which serves Walsh, Pembina and Cavalier counties to help those who are victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking etc.  Bernier also supervises three full-time and one part-time staff members. Another important aspect of Bernier’s position is the grant writing along with grant reporting and overseeing the budget for DVAC.

“I am also a certified advocate so I do work with clients when needed and am able to legal advocacy and walk clients through the protection order process and accompany clients to court” Bernier stated.

Other new staff includes the advocate for Walsh County and a new Shelter Supervisor. DVAC continues to offer personal and legal advocacy, information and referrals, and emergency shelter to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking.  Bernier explained that there are some new programs that are going to be implemented in the future which are still in the planning stages.
