The Kentucky Derby is a horse race run on the first Saturday in May and has been the preeminent horse race in the United States for well over 100 years. It is the first leg of the American Triple Crown and is followed by the Preakness Stakes, then the Belmont Stakes respectively.

Race horses aged three years race for a 1 1/4 miles at the Churchill Downs race track located in Louisville, Ky.

The party, which begins at 3 p.m. will feature the traditional drink of the Kentucky Derby, the Mint Julep. The Mint Julep, which is a mixed drink of Kentucky Bourbon and mint, has been served at the Kentucky Derby for nearly a century.

“We encourage everyone to come early if they plan on setting up an account and placing a bet on the race,” Jesse Johnson, the owner of Sporty’s Bar and Grill, stated.

The horse racing system that is set up in Sporty’s offers customers the chance to bet on live horse races and win money. How it works is customers must set up an account to place a bet so they need to bring a valid ID and $20.

The ID will be scanned by the machine to verify the customer is of legal age. A $20 deposit into the newly created customer account is required to start betting.

The $20 is placed into a betting account for the customer to use however they choose. Bets are placed right at the machine, and any winnings can be paid out right at the machine as well. Employees will be available to help set up the new customer accounts.

That won’t be the only excitement as Sporty’s will also be having a “Most Creative Hat Contest” and a “Best Dressed Couple Contest.” The prizes for the contests are a $20 gift certificate and $40 gift certificate to Sporty’s.

“We will also have the horse shoe game playing on the Wii,” Johnson stated.

This will be the first leg of the 2015 chase for the Triple Crown, and Sporty’s plans to follow the saga of horse racing to the Preakness on May 16 and the Belmont on June 4.
