He died Friday, August 7, 2015 at the St. Aloisius Nursing Home, Harvey.

Vernon was born on January 26, 1930 at the Andrew Nygard home in rural Edinburg. He was the son of Carl and Agnes (Nygard) Rusten. Music brought him great joy and he sang many solos in his youth, as well as being very active with church youth activities. He graduated from the Osnabrock High School in 1948. He obtained some credits at NDSU for a semester before completing an auto mechanics course at the Hanson Mechanical School in Fargo in 1949. He received additional training at General Motors Training Centers in Minneapolis and Denver. He was also a construction supervisor for the Flatiron Paving Company in Colorado where he also received advanced training in safety applications, business management and seminars specifically related to asphalt paving. He married Gloria Ann Vollum on July 10, 1952 in Osnabrock. They spent most of their years living in the Longmont and Estes Park communities in Colorado. also spending retirement years in Mesa, Ariz., staying busy with the handyman services he offered, continuing to offer this service after returning to North Dakota. He held a CDL license and for pure enjoyment in his retirement years he was a part-time tour bus driver for various tour companies mostly with Powder River Trailways in Colorado and The Masters Touch Christian Charter Services & Tours in Arizona. More recently they lived in the Fargo/Moorhead area, Carrington and in Harvey, taking advantage of residing close to family to help with seasonal farmwork and driving the favorite old tractor, “Big Red”. He also held a private pilot’s license as a young man, and his seemingly endless ability to accomplish most any job continued throughout his life. He attended the Bethel Baptist Church while living in Harvey.

Vernon is survived by his wife, Gloria of Harvey; son, Kraig Rusten of Estes Park, Colo.; three daughters, Rebecca Graham, Mesa, Ariz.; Debra (Larry) Powell of Mesa, Ariz., Lori (Gerald) Wilcox of Harvey; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; sisters, Alice F. Johnson of Fargo, Margaret (Robert) Groom of Lake Park, Minn., Carolyn (Raymond) Murdock of Fergus Falls, Minn., Barbara (James) Mattson of Traverse City, MI; numerous nieces and nephews.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents; niece, Karen (Johnson) Powers.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the family.
