Cavalier County Republican sports reporter Jake Kulland received the North Dakota Sportscaster of the Year award from the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association (NSSA).
“It means a lot because I got voted in by my peers in this business, and it also is a nice award for our whole area,” Kulland said about receiving the award.
Kulland began working as sportscaster for Simmons Multimedia in the winter of 1993 when the opportunity presented itself for him to pursue a career covering something he loved.
“I have had a love for sports my entire life, and I can’t believe I can make a living doing something I enjoy a lot,” Kulland stated, “Someone once told me, ‘Make sure you make a career out of something you like to do’, and I have certainly followed that path.”
The NSSA Sportscaster of the Year award winners are selected through a nomination and final balloting process. From mid-October through mid-November, NSSA members may nominate up to three people for each category. For state nominees, the top two vote-getters (plus ties) are placed on the final ballot. Final ballot voting by NSSA members takes place throughout the month of December. Winners are notified by phone during the first week of January.
“We are not even close to being a big media market, and this award says a lot for KNDK Radio, our sports sponsors and for our listeners,” Kulland said, ”I never thought I would win, so it’s very unexpected but very much appreciated.”
Kulland, who was a semifinalist for the award last year had no idea he was a finalist this year until he received a phone call about a week before he officially won.
“I don’t think people understand just how big an honor this is, not just for me but for our station,” Kulland stated.
Kulland would like to thank a few people, especially Bob and Diane Simmons, without whom he would not be doing what he loves, everyone at Simmons Multi-Media and the Cavalier County Republican, “who I constantly drive crazy on a weekly basis.”
Thanks to the many, many people who have gone on air with Kulland at games or just came along to help, namely Dennis Throndset and “The Principal” Randall Hill, who has broadcast football games with Kulland for just short of 20 years. Kulland wishes to thank Jay “Swish” Adam, “The Producer” Dave Zeis Jr., the late great Roger Snortland, Ryan Bachman, Gary Helland and so many more.
“You all have or do make me sound good, and you all are a part of this award,” Kulland said.
Thanks to all the KNDK Sports Boosters and sponsors over the years because without them none of this would be possible.
And, finally, thanks to all the listeners and readers and to family and friends who have sent congratulatory messages, cards, balloons and so much more.
“It’s been a fun ride, and I look forward to doing it for years to come,” Kulland stated.
Kulland has been invited to receive the award at the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters convention in Salsbury, N. C. in June.
Congratulations to Jake Kulland, recipient of the 2015 North Dakota Sportscaster of the Year Award!
