Jake’s take on sports

The Million Dollar Rain is here

Posted on 5/28/16

By Jake Kulland

As we begin this week, it has been raining, and raining as we write these words on May 25.  Now this is just what the doctor ordered for our area farmers, who got most of the crop in just before the first rain hit the night of May 22. The timing couldn’t be more perfect, just as long as the rain knows when to stop, which it never seems too up in this country.  And while the rains have been very beneficial to are producers, it has not to postseason spring sports.  The Region 4 High School Baseball Tournament had to be postponed on Championship Day due to heavy rain.  The title game between Grafton and Park River-Fordville-Lankin was actually moved to Mayville on May 26.  Being that had to be moved, our coverage of the tournament here in the Republican will have to wait a week. Grafton was trying to go to the State B High School Baseball Tournament in Fargo for the 10th straight year, while PRFL was trying to get there for the first time ever.  Langdon-Munich ended up taking third place in the tourney and played well for the most part.  Again, we will have complete tourney coverage next week.

State Track Meet going on May 27-28

The 2016 State A & B Track Meet is happening in Bismarck May 27-28.  The Langdon-Munich track team is sending 12 athletes to state this year.  The girls are led by Jocelyn Dinius who has qualified in five events, followed by Sydney Ellingson, who has qualified in three.  In the boys, Chase Peebles has made it three different events, and Ben Lagein in two.  Best of luck to everyone who made it to state, and we will have coverage of this event next week as well.

State Golf Meets happening next week

May 31 and June 1 are the dates for the Class B Boys and Girls State Golf Tournaments.  The boys play in Jamestown, with the girls in Carrington.  The Langdon girls have qualified as a team once again this year, while Sid Ullyott is the lone boys to make it for the Cardinals.  Of the course the girls team is also the Northeast Region champion, and are led by Senior Athlete of the Year Krystal Ratzlaff.  We should also have coverage on this next week, and again good luck to all the golfers.

Women’s League Golf set to get started

Wednesday Women’s League Golf is set to get started at the Langdon Country Club.  The Tuesday mens league got going May 24, and the now the ladies will get rolling on June 1 with a Fun Night, with the league to officially start on June 8.  Jenny Romfo is the organizer of the league once again this year, and while she is a little busy getting ready for the State Girls Golf Tournament, you can call the clubhouse at 256-5938 to sign up a two person team.  Congrats to Coach Romfo for being named Northeast Region Coach of the Year.

Summer Baseball to get rolling this week

With June just a couple of days away, Langdon summer and softball is ready to go for the season.  T-Ball and Pee Wee baseball will have their first day and night on June 1, with T-Ball at Noon and Pee Wee at 5:30 p.m. There are over 60 kids in T-Ball this year, and over 40 in Pee Wee.  Meanwhile Babe Ruth baseball will have their first game June 2 at Grafton.  Little League Baseball also begins this week, with the 12U team playing at Grafton June 1, and the 10U team playing at home against Pembina on June 2.  Girls Softball will get underway next week, on June 6.  There is a LOT of participation in all levels of baseball and softball in Langdon this year, which is fantastic to see.  Also the Langdon Red Sox American Legion Baseball team is scheduled to have their first game of the year at home versus Park River at American Legion Field June 6.  Let the summer begin!

“See ya!” next week!
