Jake’s take on sports

What day is this… What planet are we on?

As we go this time, it is the craziest time of the year for high school sports, as it’s one tournament after another.  It gets so that we move from place to place so much that it’s hard to remember where to go next, as everything kind of runs together.  Up this week is Championship Night of the District 8 Boys Basketball Tournament in Langdon Feb. 27, then the State Class B Girls Basketball Tournament at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks March 2-4, and the State Junior Gold Hockey Tournament, also in Grand Forks this year at Purpur Arena on the same dates as the State B.  There are also play-in games for the Region 2 Boys Basketball Tournament out east on Feb. 28.  It’s a bananas time of year, but something who loves chaos like myself, it’s also a lot of fun.

Lady Cards lose heart breaker in Regional semis

We will have a complete story coverage of the Region 4 Girls Basketball Tournament in Devils Lake next week, after it was completed after press time on Feb. 23.  The Langdon-Edmore-Munich Cardinals were stunned in overtime in the semifinals, losing to Harvey-Wells County 62-58.  Not sure what the deal was, but the Lady Cards were down by 10 points at halftime in each of the two games they played in the first round and semis.  They battled back in each game in the second half, to beat Benson County in the first round, but they grabbed the lead back and then lost it again to the Hornets.  It always tough to lose, but double tough when you come all the back to look like you’re going to win and then still lose. But we need to say that no player needs to be too down, as it shows the heart of a team to come back in both games when they could have easily thrown in the towel.  We will have much more with a season wrap for the Cardinals next week.

End of the year hockey tournaments start in March

We are beginning to wind down winter sports, and hockey is no exception.  End of the year state tournaments will be held for the Langdon Blades junior gold, girls and pee wee teams, the weekend of March 2-5.  The junior gold team will play in Grand Forks at Purpur Arena March 2-4, with their first game coming March 2 versus Richland at 1:15pm.  You can hear all of their games from that tourney on KNDK 1080.  Meanwhile the girls team heads to Watford City for their tournament March 3-5, while the pee wees tournament site was yet to determined as of this writing but will also run March 3-5.  Best of luck to all of our Blades teams in the postseason!

Happy Tournament Time and “See ya!” next week!
