Winter storms still causing problems in March
By Jake Kulland
They say that March comes in like a lion, and they weren’t kidding when a nasty winter storm/blizzard came through our area on March 6-7. This saw many problems with numerous cars being stranded in the ditch all over Cavalier County the day and night of March 7. Major thanks yous need to be put out to the Cavalier County Sheriffs Department and all emergency responders, as they got to as many stuck vehicles and worried passengers in them as they could, which was from what we were told a very long list. Some people don’t seem to take winter storms very seriously these days, but let March 7 be a reminder that they can be very dangerous no matter what month they are in. Thankfully no serious injuries or issues came out of it, and that’s thanks to the many kind and brave people that came out to help. This storm also caused the postponement two different times of the Region 4 Boys Basketball Tournament in Devils Lake, which is finally underway as we write these words on March 9. We will have a full winter sports wrap up next week.
Spring sports are underway; Boys track has a “new” coach
As cold and icky as it’s been the last week, it seems rather strange to be talking about spring sports, but here we are. Boys and Girls track has already begun, as they started practice on March 6. Jane Hart is once again head coaching the girls team and there is a new sheriff in town on the boys side. Rich Olson has agreed to take over the boys squad, replacing legendary and Hall of Fame Coach Denny Dinius, who retired from the position last spring. Olson, who of course has coached girls volleyball for the Cardinals the last 20 plus years, is no stranger to the track program. He spent 16 years as an assistant track coach, took about five or six years away from the program, and now is back as head boys coach. Both the boys and girls teams have over 30 kids out for track in grades 7-12, so that should mean good things for the season. Also a reminder that high school baseball will have their first practice on March 20, with boys and girls golf to follow on March 27. We will have much more on that in the weeks to come.
1992 Munich State Championship Team to be recognized March 17
Has it really been 25 year since Munich won the State Class B Boys Basketball Tournament? Indeed it has, which is crazy, but that team will be honored at the 2017 State Class B Boys Basketball Tournament, to be held in Minot March 16-18. The ’92 team will be announced on semifinal night during the halftime of one of the semifinal games March 17 at the MSU Dome. There will be a reception for the team to follow that, which is open to everyone, to be held at the Holiday Inn Riverside. Munich’s Mr. Basketball Marty McDonald, Justin Schommer, Justin Fletchshock, Chris Wirth, Jonathon Wirth, Todd Westphal and many more along of course with coaches Jack DeMaine and Kevin Heppner are all expected to be there. We will be there too to cover it, and we hope to have much more, including a then and now team picture in the weeks ahead. I still can’t believe it’s been 25 years… Where has the time gone?
Don’t forget to turn your clocks ahead Saturday night, and “See ya!” next week!
