The board had several items of business to discuss including updating the school’s policy manual regarding sexual offenders on school property.

The board received an update on the after school child care program from LASD Superintendent Daren Christianson. St. Alphonsus will be handling the program in conjunction with the  Langdon Public Daycare. LASD will be responsible for helping bus the children in the program from the Langdon Area Elementary School to St. Alphonsus at the end of the school day. St. A’s will begin the program after April 1.

LASD board president Warren Jonasson informed the board that it was time for the board to decide if they would be publishing the school board minutes in the official paper of the county. Jonasson brought forward the idea that the school not publish their minutes in the Cavalier County Republican, opting instead to have the minutes published on the school website. The board approved the motion to put the issue of publication of school board minutes to a vote of the district during the upcoming school board election.

Members of the Langdon Area High School Student Council were present to request that the board allow the students of LAHS to recite the pledge of allegiance once a week. The members explained that while no one would be forced to recite the pledge, it would be a good activity for the students to partake in. The council already voted to approve the action and has the administration’s support. The Langdon Area Elementary School already recites the pledge in classrooms at the beginning of the week and as a school once a month. The board approved the request and commended the student council for taking action to bring this to the high school.

Christianson brought forward the policy manual relating to sexual offenders on school property. Christianson explained that a parent had called and requested the information. Christianson contacted several other schools as well as the association of schools for references of their policies.

The board after reviewing the policies rescinded the current policies and instead accepted and approved the policies from the association of schools in regards to sexual offenders on school property and parent offenders on school property. The new policy has parent offenders having to contact Christianson with a request for being allowed on school grounds or to school activities. This provides the criteria for Christianson to determine parent offender access on school grounds.
