A wet and wild time at the NE Region Legion Tourney
By Jake Kulland
Not sure what it is but American Legion Baseball tournaments the last couple of years have been interesting affairs. It seems like not one can get through without having any issues with rain. This year’s Northeast Region Tourney in Langdon is no exception. As we write this week, we have been in a rain delay on July 19 as three quarters of an inch of rain fell on American Legion Field, pushing games back, some even to the next day. This is extremely frustrating to the tournament organizers and even more to the ground’s crew, but as we say “it is what it is.” No one can do anything about the weather, and at least a rain day was planned when the bracket came out. Many thanks to the dozens of volunteers who helped run this year’s tournament in a variety of ways. We are going to need all of you next year, plus more as you read the next topic below.
Langdon American Post 98 awarded the 2017 State B American Legion Tournament
Those are exciting words as American Legion Field will host its fourth State B Tourney next year. It will add to 1998, 2002 and 2014 as the other years state has been in Langdon. The exact dates haven’t been given to us yet, but it should be around the last week of July. Thanks to Daryl Kempel, Leon Hiltner and many other Post 98 legionnaires, and to the Langdon Area Baseball committiee for putting in a successful bid to have the tournament here. Look for much more news on the topic in the months ahead. The Langdon Red Sox will get an automatic bid into the tournament.
Langdon Eagles Babe Ruth team continues to dominate
We are thrilled to tell you that the Langdon Babe Ruth team, sponsored by Langdon Eagles Aerie 3454, won the North Valley Babe Ruth Tournament for the first time since the late 1990’s. They won the tourney on July 16 with a 13-1 win over Park River. The Eagles Babe Ruthers will now play in a best two of out three series versus Turtle Mountain League Champion Cando for the right to go to the State Babe Ruth Tournament, which starts in Thompson on July 28. It’s been a magical year for the team, as they have just one loss on the season. The games versus Cando will be played in Langdon on July 23 at 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. To our knowledge, Langdon has never gone to a State Babe Ruth Tournament before (although you would think it would have to had to happened sometime), so this is all sorts of uncharted territory for the whole baseball program. We wish them the best of luck the rest of the way.
“See ya!” next week!
