North Dakota finished 21st in the State Team Standings with 1,564+ points. Texas won the State Standings with 10330+ points followed by Idaho (8124+ points) and Colorado (6,512.5 points), respectively. Idaho won the Boys State Team Standings with 5025 points followed by Texas (4,635 points) and Oklahoma (3,840 points), respectively. North Dakota cowboys ranked 16th with 1,175 points. In the Girls State Team Standings, Texas claimed the crown with 5,695+ points followed by Idaho (3,099+) points and Colorado (2,740 points), respectively, while North Dakota Cowgirls ranked 28th with 389+ points.
Killdeer’s Riley Blankenship, though, did give North Dakota, and Dunn County in particular, a bright moment for most of the week at the NHSFR. Blankenship, who qualified for nationals by winning the state rodeo held in Bowman last month, was in action the first day of nationals and put on a show, with a rodeo-event-best 79-point performance. When the first round ended Wednesday, Blankenship remained in first place.
But the second round wasn’t as kind to Blankenship, who scored a 67 Saturday morning, giving him a total of 146 points. Jess Lockwood of Volborg, Mont., who trailed Blankenship by a single point at the end of the first round, rallied in the second round with a repeat 78 performance to claim the championship with 156 points. Dallas Rohring of Rifle, Colo., finished as runner up with a score of 154. Blankenship drop to sixth place with Saturday’s ride.
This was Blankenship’s first and final appearance at the National High School Finals Rodeo as he graduated from high school in May.
Other placers from North Dakota included:
- Boyd Stroh, Dickinson, 11th in Saddle Bronc Riding
- Layton Bohlman, Richardton, and Ryder Bohlman, Richardton, 19th in Team Roping
- Sam Jorgenson, Watford City, 20th in Breakway Roping
- MiKaela Miller, Bismarck, 17th (tie) in Girls Cutting
- Riley Rustad, Kindred, 14th in Boys Cutting

Smith didn’t win a single event, but amassed 1,690 points with placings in Saddle Bronc Riding (fourth), Steer Wrestling (sixth), and Boys Cutting (second). Smith won the Steer Wrestling Short Round and was second in the short round of Boys Cutting.
