A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, August 7, 2018, at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Langdon for Lawrence H. Kartes, 97, of Langdon, who passed away Friday, August 3, 2018, at Maple Manor Care Center in Langdon.
Burial at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Mt. Carmel.
Lawrence was born March 30, 1921, to David Peter and Mary Ann (Brown) Kartes on the family farm near Mt. Carmel. He attended Dresden #3, St. Alphonsus and graduated from Wales High School. He entered the US Army in 1943 and was honorably discharged in 1945. He returned to Mt. Carmel, and on November 9, 1948, he was united in marriage to Cyrilla Koehmstedt at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church. He farmed until 1977 and then drove school bus and worked part-time for the county. In his younger days, he and his brothers, Les and Art, were known for playing old-time music for house parties, dances, and the elderly. They entertained others for almost 50 years. He loved playing his fiddle. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Eagles Aerie #3454, VFW, American Legion Post #98, and was a clerk for Dresden Township for over 50 years.
Surviving Lawrence are his wife, Cyrilla, of Langdon; sons Daniel of Grand Forks and Joseph of Coon Rapids, Minn.; grandchildren: Charles, Nathaniel, and Cameron; sister Alice Metzger of Langdon; sister-in-law Alyce Kartes; brother-in-law Dennis Stewart; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings: twin brother Leslie Kartes, Madeline (Silverius) Metzger, Fr. Alvin Kartes, Arthur Kartes and Mary Ann Stewart; and brother-in-law Arnold Metzger.
