Lady Cards crush North Star, R-W to push win streak to 9

The Langdon-Edmore-Munich Cardinals girls basketball looked to continue playing rock solid defense when they played two District 8 games at home versus North Star on January 11, then at Rolette- Wolford on January 14.

The Lady Cards clamped down defensively in both games, beating the Bearcats 59-23 and the Comets 77-25. With the wins the Cardinals are now 10-2 on the season and have won nine games in a row. After traveling to play Medina-Pingree-Buchanan on January 19, Langdon-Edmore-Munich will have their regular season District 8 game at Dunseith on January 22 then will host New Rockford- Sheyenne as part of a boys/girls basketball doubleheader on the afternoon of January 26.

Langdon-Edmore-Munich 59, North Star 23

Against the Bearcats, the Cardinals got after it right away, outscoring them 15-2 in the first quarter with six different girls scoring. Lexi Olson and Callie Ronningen each hit 3-pointers in the second quarter to help stretch the lead to 31-7 at halftime.

Olson and Ronningen each had seven points in the third quarter as the Lady Cards built up their lead to its biggest at 53-10 early in the fourth quarter.

Defensively the Cardinals forced 29 turnovers in the game. Olson went 6 for 8 from the field and tied Ronningen for a team leading 14 points each, followed by Kaylee Lowery and Morgan Freije with eight apiece and both had five steals. Lowery also led the team with six assists while Ronningen nailed a double-double with 10 rebounds. Sydney Stauss led North Star with six points.

The running game was in high gear for the Cards against the Comets. Langdon-Edmore-Munich put in 28 points in the first quarter and pushed things to a 44-8 lead at halftime. Callie Ronningen had 14 of her 15 points in the first half, while Kaitlynn Scherr and Morgan Freije each were in double figures by the half with 10 points each.

Scherr caught fire in the third quarter with 11 points for a game high of 21 for the game. Kaylee Lowery had eight third quarter points to make her the fourth Cardinal in double digits in scoring in the game with 12. Scherr helped the Cardinals force 21 Comet turnovers with nearly 10 steals for the game. The Lady Cards shot 27 free throws in the contest, making 18 of them.
