The longest day of the year is here
by Jake Kulland
As we push through the month of June, which seems to fly by, we are at the point of the longest day of 2019. June 21 marks the Summer Solstice, and after that we go right back down the ladder. That day also mark the official start of summer, which goes from now until Sept. 23. The good news is that the chilly temperatures we been dealing with lately will be replaced by temps back up in to the 80’s or at least near 80 degrees all the way through the 4th of July. That is good news, as several events are coming up and summer baseball will be hitting its stride. Let’s talk about that a bit below.
Langdon Red Sox Post 98 Legion team hits the busy part of their schedule; American Legion celebrates in 100th Anniversary in Grand Forks June 29
It’s been sort of soft opening for Langdon Red Sox Post 98 American Legion Baseball to begin their season. An NDSU Football team camp in Fargo had most of the baseball players participating in that, so the teams has played just three games at press time. They are 1-2 in District 5 games so far this year, losing to Park River and splitting two games with Hatton-Northwood. That is all about to change however, as the team will be very busy in the week. The Red Sox host Thompson for a double header on a Sunday, June 23 at 5:00 p.m., then also entertain Grafton on June 26. They then play at the annual Enderlin Wood Bat Tournament June 28-30, but will also be a part of the American Legion 100th Anniversary on June 29.
This is the official Centennial of the American Legion nationwide, and a huge celebration is planned in Grand Forks for the North Dakota part of it on June 29, with parades and more going on, along with a number of baseball games played at Kraft Field. The Red Sox will be a part of those games, coming up from Enderlin, to play Oakes at 12 Noon on that day for folks that want to go down and be a part of it. They will also be in parade starting at 10:30 a.m. This is a big year for the American Legion, and it’s great to see the team involved in all the festivities.
Tournament season continues at the Langdon Country Club
The good times continue at the Langdon Country Club, with another tournament coming up. The next one on the calendar is the Cardinals Sports Boosters Tourney, which is coming up on June 27. This is one of their biggest fundraisers of the year, and they hope to see you all out there playing in it. This event is a 4-person scramble format, and all ages are welcome to play. This tournament is a little different than the others held at the course, and they have different fun challenges on each hole for a chance to win many great prizes to spice things up a big. Contact Ethen Askvig to sign for this tourney, or you can also sign up at the clubhouse.
Also a reminder that the International Golf Tournament, featuring a fantastic 54 hole tourney split between the courses of Langdon, Walhalla, Morden and Winkler is coming up on July 26-28. Registration forms are now available, and can be picked up at any of the four courses, or you can signup online through their website at www.international-golf.net. We will talk this tourney up more in the month ahead.
“See ya!” next week!
