Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 31, 2019, at the Walhalla Lutheran Church in Walhalla for Carl Kartes, 87, of Walhalla, who passed away Friday, July 26, 2019, at Maple Manor Care Center in Langdon.
Carl Kartes was born November 23, 1931, near Mount Carmel to Frank J. and Olive (Hell) Kartes. He served in the United States Army from 1953 – 1955. On July 17, 1956, he married Ivy Thompson. They lived near Mount Carmel until purchasing a farm in rural Walhalla in 1959. He raised livestock and farmed until his retirement in 1994. He enjoyed making the early morning coffee at the Walhalla Co-Op after his retirement. He was an avid hunter, trapper and fisherman for most of his life.
Carl is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ivy; children: Gail Kartes (Guy Johnson) of Edinburg, Doris (Donn) Hancock of Emerado, Dan Kartes of Langdon, Chuck (Suzy) Kartes of Edinburg, and Carla Kartes-Hiller of West Fargo. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; sister Gloria Johnson of Langdon; and brothers: Ben, Gary and Lee, all of Seattle, Wash.
Preceding him in death are his parents; infant son; and siblings: Ivadell, Betty, Parnell, Darreld, Pat, Mike and Judith.
