High School Football season to get rolling Aug. 23

By Jake Kulland

As we get going this week, the 2019 High School Football season is about to get underway.  Aug. 23 is the opening date for all Class A 11 Man and 9 Man teams across North Dakota.  The defending state champion Langdon-Edmore-Munich Cardinals are ranked number one the Region 2A Coaches Poll, which was recently released by the North Dakota Pigskin Preview publication.  The Cards are followed by Harvey-Wells County, Rugby, Carrington, Grafton, Westhope-Newburg-Glenburn, Park River and Bottineau in the poll.  The Cardinals, who enjoyed an unbeaten 12-0 record a year ago, begin defense of their title at home versus Northern Cass on Aug. 23.  After playing at Hatton-Northwood on Aug. 30, the Cards will begin their Region 2A conference schedule at home against Park River on Sept. 6.  A reminder that Homecoming and Senior Night will both be during Langdon-Edmore-Munich’s last home game against Carrington on Oct. 11.

For 9 Man Football, in Region 2 New Rockford-Sheyenne is picked first in a similar coaches poll, followed by Cavalier, St. John, North Prairie, North Star, Nelson County, Benson County, North Border and Dunseith.  North Border begins their season at home versus North Prairie (Rolla-Rolette) on Aug. 23, while Cavalier begins at Larimore for a non-conference game on the same night.

High School Football will be a lot of fun for our area once again this season, and we are very much looking forward to broadcasting the action with “The Principal” Randy Hill, Ryan Bachman, Gary Helland, “The Producer” Dave Zeis Jr. and a cast of thousands once again on KNDK 1080 and 95-7 The Rock Farm this season, as well of course covering everything here in the Republican.

Volleyball practice to start Aug. 19

While there is a lot of excitement for football season to begin, there is just as much for the volleyball season.  Practice starts statewide on Aug. 19, with Langdon-Edmore-Munich have their practice for the A, B and C squads that day at 8:30am, followed by the junior high at 1:00pm.  The Lady Cards will be headed up once again this year by Rich Olson, and he is assisted again by Tami Flink and Allison Podhrasky.  Jane Hart and Morgan Titus will coach the junior high teams.  Langdon-Edmore-Munich is looking to win the Region 4 title for the fifth straight year, and their first match of the season is coming on Sept. 5 at Cavalier.

School to start on Aug. 21

We will leave with the reminder that school is in session this week.  Langdon, Munich, Edmore, North Border and Cavalier schools all will begin on Aug. 21, which is the first time we can remember that they are all starting on the same day.  Please be watching for kids coming to and from school so we all can get off to a safe beginning to the year.  Also a reminder that our Fall Sports Preview will be out in next week’s paper.

“See ya!” next week!
