Funeral services were held on Friday, November 1, 2019, at the Amundson Funeral Home in Grand Forks for Darla Renee Matt (Schanz), who was born June 6, 1959, in Langdon. She unexpectedly passed away Sunday, October 27, 2019, age 60, at her home in Grand Forks.
“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” – Maya Angelou. And with Darla, what you felt was love. Whether you were family, a friend, or just visiting—she always ensured that at least two things happened: that you felt at home and that you’d had enough to eat. A life-long woman of Christian faith, she walked a path of tireless service to others that was truly something to behold. Born into a farming household, she was well acquainted with the value of hard work and the joy of family. The love that she held for her own family—her husband, Hugh; her daughters, Natasha and Ariel; her sons-in-law, Jacob and Joshua; and especially her grandchildren, Devyn, Gabriel, and Phoebe—was central to everything she did. She had a beautiful singing voice and an infectious laugh that could fill any room, charming everyone in it. And when she unveiled her gallons of baked masterpieces every year for Christmas, it was impossible to resist the spirit. She’ll live on in our hearts in many ways. As we leave our refrigerator doors open just a little too long, as we forget our mugs of coffee in the microwave several times over—but especially as we look into the eyes of our own children and imagine what she must have seen in us.
