Funeral services were held Thursday, October 22, 2020, at the Trinity Lutheran Church of Edinburg for Orlyn Nygard, age 85, of Park River, formerly of Edinburg, who passed away Monday, October 19, 2020, with Sharon, his loving wife of 35 years, by his side. Interment was at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Edinburg.

Orlyn was born to Edwin and Alda (Steen) Nygard on April 4, 1935, at the Nygard Family farm, west of Edinburg. He attended grade school in a one-room country school just south of the farm. He started high school in Edinburg and graduated from Grafton High School. In 1952 he married Joyce Johnson, and they had five children. They had a love for music, and he enjoyed playing his guitar and singing. Together they worked in the church music and youth ministries until her death in 1976, leaving him to raise their three youngest children by himself. A multi-talented business entrepreneur, he farmed and had an excavation business along with plumbing, heating and carpentry services. In 1978 he opened Nygard Bolt and Supply. He enjoyed making his customers happy and visiting with them. His customer base soon became his friends. He prided himself on this motto: “We run our business by the Golden Rule.” The business remains in the family and is still thriving today. In 1985 he met and married Sharon Sprunk, who brought great joy and fullness to his life. Together they worked hand-in-hand to expand Nygard Bolt & Supply. They also loved to travel; their favorite trip being an annual visit to Medora for the musical. He had a wonderful laugh and a great sense of humor, often laughing until he cried. His biggest passions were his love of God, his wife, family, then work.

Orlyn was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Alda; sisters: Aldys Benjaminson and LaVonne Cernik; and his first wife, Joyce.

He will be dearly missed by his loving wife, Sharon; his children: Karen (Raymond) Gutterud, Gary (Deborah) Nygard, Laurie (Randy) Thompson, Mark Nygard and Wendy (Loren) Machart; ten grandchildren: Theresa Sack, Susan (Jason) Groves, Chris Gutterud, Stephen (Sherry) Nygard, Stacey Nygard, David Lueker, Jonny (Heather) Thompson, Damin Nygard, Elaine Nygard, Craig (Kari) Machart; 20 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; his sisters: Sharon (Charles) Troftgruben and Nancy (Jim) Ludwick-Hassey; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins; and many other loving relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers the family would prefer memorials made to the donor’s choice.

The Tollefson Funeral Home of Edinburg was in charge of the arrangements. An online guest book and video of the funeral service available at:
